Dear Friends and Sponsors!
The school year is well underway at Zmiev, the kids have returned to classes with renewed enthusiasm and fond memories of their summer vacation and meeting some of the ULC Sponsors.
> The letters are coming in steadily from both sides and it’s awesome. Children are anxious for your answers and more letters. I would like to remind you to get your November letters in by the 10th of November please. It will really help us if you can plan to get your letters in to Darby by the first week of each month.
> Let’s make an effort to write at least once a month and include some recent photos. The kids really treasure the photos and letters they get from their sponsors!

> Things on the agenda this fall/winter are:
> 1.Dental work and more dental work! You may donate via check and we have set up an option to donate online for this through paypal. The link is on the blog:
> www.worldbeyondtheorphanage.com We can arrange dental work for your children, or for children in most need. We are also fundraising for Diana who needs serious jaw surgery.
> 2.Last year ULC sponsored one on one instruction from a reading teacher. The director of the orphanage asks if this can continue this year. It helped two children graduate into the next grade last year. One second grade girl, and one 12 year old boy who couldn’t read before that. It is definitely worth continuing. The cost is around $50 a month. Please let us know if you would like to sponsor all or any part of it.
> 3.We still haven’t done anything about birthday celebrations. The orphanage says it would be nice to celebrate all birthdays by the season. The cost of cake for all of the kids is around $70, four times a year.
> 4.There are children who are interested in taking English classes (after having such a wonderful time with our sponsors who went on the Black Sea trip in August). If we can sponsor that for 5 children, it would cost 5$ per child a week/ 20$ per child a month.
> 5.As for packages. Per Olga, these are things that are better to buy in Ukraine because of language or sizing issues: shoes, winter coats for kids over 12 years old, books, movies, hygiene and medical supplies. Most needed items are underwear, socks, gloves, hats, slippers, arts and crafts, games that don’t rely on language, puzzles, coloring books, color pencils.
> 6.We are trying to find a sponsor for Nadia C. She is in 9th grade and graduating next may. She is an amazing young woman, extremely talented in art. Terrible life story, but she has much potential. She is currently working on a portfolio to apply to art school after graduating May of 2011. We desperately need a sponsor for her. The art school is free, but all the supplies and other expenses she will need help with. We will be making her art into postcards to sell to raise money for her. Watch for more news on this soon.
7. There is an urgent need for all children to have boots for the coming wet and cold weather. The children walk to school every day and without boots they are having to spend the entire school day with wet feet . Any contributions that can be made towards this will be greatly appreciated!
